“This one is a medieval love letter to friends both present and past, and the intricacies that form the web of friendships that have moved in and out of my life. The photograph is a portrait I took of my friend Fiona, with a camera I borrowed from a photographer friend who taught me how to shoot film. I instructed Fiona to hold an object of significance to them, and they chose a scythe gifted by an old friend. The intimate threads in the web meet and part again, expanding infinitely. High school is a time filled with the murky ambiguity around sexuality, love, and social relationships. What is platonic, what is romantic, and what is sexual? The shape of the pendant simultaneously evokes a codpiece and a chastity belt, reflecting duality and mixed messages of my teen upbringing. There is razor thin edge between the repressed and the erotic, and the unspoken in-between informs a range of emotion from desire to disgust. Inaction versus action. This is a tribute to friendships filled with trust, vulnerability, and potential heartbreak.”
